Ronan took in the view from the battlement, awed by the magnificent beauty of the Dark Mountains. This high up and with a bright day to illuminate the surrounding area, he could finally see the country with more clarity. “It’s lovely.” He stood close to Tarben with his cloak shielding him from the still-cool wind. It was the most relaxed he’d felt in days. “And I can see how impregnable your father’s castle is. It could survive a siege forever, too, I’ll wager. Was that the purpose of bringing me up here, to show me that my people can’t mount a rescue?”

Tarben braced one shoulder against the stone and looked at him. “I wanted you to see this country through my eyes, that’s all. This has always been my favorite place to come. When I was very young, my mother commanded that guards follow me to make sure I didn’t lean too far over and plunge to my death. I was quite fearless as a boy.”

Ronan flicked his gaze in his direction. “I’d say you still are. Stealing me off the streets of Moorcondia was a bold move.” Stupidly, he instantly regretted his words, even though they were true, and he had every right to remain indignant over his kidnapping.

Tarben didn’t move away. He kept staring at Ronan, which was both disconcerting and welcome. “I can’t deny the truth of your words, although I am glad it was me and not someone else. A large part of my duty now is to care for you. I must say that pleases me.”

Ronan rested his arms on the wall, then put his chin on them. “Does it?” He couldn’t help remembering what the man had done to him in the middle of the night. The mere thought of it caused him to become aroused and embarrassed in equal measure. He was having a hard time looking Tarben in the eye.

“I believe I’ve been demonstrative about that.” There was a smile to his tone, but his expression turned serious, and he leaned closer to Ronan as he spoke. “What happened to your face?”

Ronan’s hand flew to one cheek, sure he was blushing. When he felt the roughness, he understood what the man was referring to. His answer really did make him flushed. “It’s, um, nothing. Your…ah, beard I think roughed up my skin.” When he’d seen himself in the mirror that morning, he’d felt marked. That sentiment didn’t bother him as it should.

“Huh. My apologies, I wouldn’t have expected that. I don’t kiss other men very often and when I do, they usually also have beards, so…”

A ridiculous spurt of jealously overtook Ronan. “I suppose you’ve had an untold amount of lovers.”

Tarben chuckled. “Well, it’s true I haven’t kept track of the number, but I am a man who tends to seek relief on a daily basis.”

“We’ve been together for a number of days and you’ve gone without. Other than last night,” he added, almost under his breath. Then he shot Tarben a look.
