Ronan took in the view from the battlement, awed by the magnificent beauty of the Dark Mountains. This high up and with a bright day to illuminate the surrounding area, he could finally see the country with more clarity. âItâs lovely.â He stood close to Tarben with his cloak shielding him from the still-cool wind. It was the most relaxed heâd felt in days. âAnd I can see how impregnable your fatherâs castle is. It could survive a siege forever, too, Iâll wager. Was that the purpose of bringing me up here, to show me that my people canât mount a rescue?â
Tarben braced one shoulder against the stone and looked at him. âI wanted you to see this country through my eyes, thatâs all. This has always been my favorite place to come. When I was very young, my mother commanded that guards follow me to make sure I didnât lean too far over and plunge to my death. I was quite fearless as a boy.â
Ronan flicked his gaze in his direction. âIâd say you still are. Stealing me off the streets of Moorcondia was a bold move.â Stupidly, he instantly regretted his words, even though they were true, and he had every right to remain indignant over his kidnapping.
Tarben didnât move away. He kept staring at Ronan, which was both disconcerting and welcome. âI canât deny the truth of your words, although I am glad it was me and not someone else. A large part of my duty now is to care for you. I must say that pleases me.â
Ronan rested his arms on the wall, then put his chin on them. âDoes it?â He couldnât help remembering what the man had done to him in the middle of the night. The mere thought of it caused him to become aroused and embarrassed in equal measure. He was having a hard time looking Tarben in the eye.
âI believe Iâve been demonstrative about that.â There was a smile to his tone, but his expression turned serious, and he leaned closer to Ronan as he spoke. âWhat happened to your face?â
Ronanâs hand flew to one cheek, sure he was blushing. When he felt the roughness, he understood what the man was referring to. His answer really did make him flushed. âItâs, um, nothing. Yourâ¦ah, beard I think roughed up my skin.â When heâd seen himself in the mirror that morning, heâd felt marked. That sentiment didnât bother him as it should.
âHuh. My apologies, I wouldnât have expected that. I donât kiss other men very often and when I do, they usually also have beards, soâ¦â
A ridiculous spurt of jealously overtook Ronan. âI suppose youâve had an untold amount of lovers.â
Tarben chuckled. âWell, itâs true I havenât kept track of the number, but I am a man who tends to seek relief on a daily basis.â
âWeâve been together for a number of days and youâve gone without. Other than last night,â he added, almost under his breath. Then he shot Tarben a look.
